In 2003, makers experienced a 30 percent demand growth. An even higher growth of 35 to 40 percent is expected next year. Micro motors are expected to lead the growth. Interest in the production of micro motors is scaling up. Key demand drivers are mobile phones, and VCD and DVD players.
Micro-motor makers are bullish, confident of strong demand prospects from traditional demand drivers such as home appliance, industrial and office automation, telecom, IT and automotive applications.
Mainland China's DC micro-motor industry improved by about 10 percent in 2003, reaching a production value of US$302 million. Its output exceeded 300 million units, representing nearly 80 percent of the global production. Almost two-thirds of the output was exported.
Makers upgrade production lines
With 1,000 manufacturers, mainland China turned out 1 billion AC motors and 2 billion DC motors in 2003. On average, manufacturers profiled in this market intelligence report are running at 78 percent utilization rate with a monthly capacity of 11 million units.
To increase yield, makers are upgrading key processes, such as winding, welding and tooling for both AC and DC motors. The profiled makers have factory sizes averaging about 30,000 square meters. Many suppliers are also adding production lines. Manufacturers are based mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning and Tianjin.
Motor shipments from Guangdong average US$17.5 million a month, making the province the largest exporter for the 18 months ended March 2004.
Mainland China supplies more than 50 percent of the world market. Exports reached US$233.7 million in the six months to June 2004. About 40 percent of mainland China's electric motor manufacturers have export capabilities; 200 makers are either foreign-owned or foreign-invested. Unit shipments of the top 10 of the 104 profiled motor manufacturers were 765 million in 2003, valued at over US$240 million.
Asia %#8212; particularly Japan — is the top export destination, soaking up 38 percent of the total shipment volume. Other major export markets are South Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe and the US, which averaged US$13.19 million monthly during the first half of 2004.
Single-phase AC motors raked in US$356.3 million in total export value in 2003, up nearly 70 percent year-on-year. Shipment value reached US$97.05 million during the first quarter of 2004.
Export value for multiphase AC motors was worth US$19.51 million during the first quarter of 2004, up 54.13 and 7.87 percent from the same period in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
Industry overview
Makers experienced a 30 percent demand growth in 2003, triggering a boost in production capacities. Steady growth is expected through 2005, when demand is expected to increase by 35 to 40 percent.
Mainland China's motor manufacturing base is one of the world's largest, supplying more than 50 percent of the global motor market. Output of AC motors in 2003 totaled about 1 billion units and that of DC motors, 2 billion units. The top 10 manufacturers profiled in this report have a combined in-house monthly production capacity of 977 million units. The local industry is comprised of more than 1,000 makers. Most are running at near full capacity. For instance, Shanghai Moons' Electric, which has a monthly capacity of 200,000 stepping motors, is running at 90 percent of its capacity. Some of the major manufacturers with 70 to 80 percent utilization rates include Yueqing Boda Electric, Changzhou Duowei Electric, Jinlong Machinery & Electronics, Zhejiang Lufa Micro Motor, Shenzhen Menghao Motor, Shenzhen Shenguang Science & Technology, Zhuhai Mitsumi Electronic, Shenzhen Qijintai Ind. and state-owned Tianjin Tianhong Micromotor. Their monthly capacity averaged 10 million units.
With demand from consumer electronics rising, makers are expanding their capacities, updating their product lines, keeping prices stable and automating production lines to increase yield at lower cost and to stay globally competitive.
Hengdian Group DMEGC Magnetics, No. 4 in mainland China's top 100 electronic components manufacturers, is fully automating its production lines. On its part, Menghao Motor is adding new production lines that will focus on micro motors used in digital cameras. Even as competition is tough against Japanese and Taiwan manufacturers, mainland China makers are able to grab a larger market share with their ability to manufacture products at lower costs.
Mainland China's DC micro-motor industry improved by about 10 percent in 2003, reaching a production value of US$302 million. The full-year output exceeded 300 million units, representing nearly 80 percent of the global production. Almost two-thirds of the output was exported.
Guangdong has largest export volume
About 40 percent of mainland China's motor makers export their products. The total export value of single-phase AC motors in 2003 was US$356.3 million, up nearly 70 percent year-onyear. During the first quarter of 2004, export value reached US$97.05 million.
In the 18 months ended March 2004, Guangdong emerged as the top exporting province in mainland China, with US$17.5 million worth of shipments a month. Guangdong's export volume accounts for 57 percent of total exports in mainland China and that of Jiangsu, 11 percent; and Zhejiang, 9 percent.
Thirty-eight percent of exports are soaked up by Asia, notably Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan. The North American market absorbs 36 percent of mainland China exports of AC motors, Western Europe, 9 percent and the Middle East, 8 percent.

Changzhou Duowei Electric Co. Ltd
Established in 1997, Changzhou Duowei Electric Co. Ltd was formerly named Wujin Fangzheng Electric Motor and Appliance Co. Ltd. Duowei is a high-tech enterprise specializing in the manufacture of motors. Its product range includes single-phase series universal motors, single-phase capacitor motors, stepping motors, permanent magnetic DC motors, brushless DC motors, complete motor sets and motor control units. These motors are used in office automation equipment, electric tools, home appliances, medical equipment, industrial control products and toys. All are UL-listed and 3C-certified.
The company's registered capital of US$1.81 million enables it to produce more than 2 million electric motors and one million motor control units a year. Operating at more than 70 percent utilization rate, Duowei realized a total turnover amounting to US$6 million in 2003.
To increase its annual sales by 20 percent and meet growing demand, the company will expand its brushless DC motors capacity from the current 10,000 units to 30,000 units this year. A further increase in capacity is expected in the next two years.
Over 90 percent of output is exported directly, with the US absorbing 70 percent of exports, followed by Europe at 20 percent, and the remainder by other countries.
Manufacturing capability
The Global Sources team visited Duowei's production facility at the Shushang Industrial Zone in Wujin, about half an hour's drive from the Changzhou city center. The plant covers an area of 23,000 square meters and has a total workforce of 430.
On the first floor of the factory is the rotor and stator processing workshop. There are about 60 workers here engaged in pressing-in, insulating, wire winding and testing, and 20 to 30 wire-winding machines, as well as four dynamic-balance testing machines. Performance and specification testing of stators is done with the use of three smart automatic test tables.
The section for stator processing has more than 20 workers and two automatic motor stator-testing machines. In the insulation- treatment room on the same floor, we saw two impregnating machines and two paint-dropping machines manned by five to six workers.
We passed the warehouse on the second floor on the way to the third-floor assembly workshop. There we found six assembly lines, each with 16 workers. Two lines are used for capacitor motors, three for universal motors and one for PCB assembly.
