While electronic products are increasingly utilizing single-chip components, a significant part of electronic circuitry still favors discrete semiconductors, such as diodes and MOSFETs.
China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) statistics show that 66 billion units of discrete semiconductors were produced in mainland China and Taiwan in 2004. By the end of 2005, aggregate production will reach 100 billion units.
In Taiwan alone, the Industrial Technology Research Institute's (ITRI) Opto-Electronics and System (OES) Laboratories report that sales revenue of transistors and diodes is poised to rise 20 percent, from US$772.35 million in 2004 to US$926.82 million in 2005.
The transistor and diode industry in mainland China and Taiwan, including discrete semiconductor makers, currently comprises 130 manufacturers. The total number of makers in 2004 was 120.
Production hubs in mainland China include the Yangtze River Delta and Circum Bohai Region. Most of the makers are locally owned private enterprises.
The demand drivers for transistors and diodes in mainland China are consumer electronics, IT and telecom products.
In Taiwan, where production is focused mostly on laser diodes, automotive and industrial applications have a higher market share.
Principal findings in mainland China's transistor and diode industry are:
The production volume of diodes and diode modules of mainland China makers totaled 24 billion units in 2004.
The mainland China segment is expected to produce about 30 billion units of diodes and diode modules by the end of 2005, up 25 percent from 2004.
Sales of mainland China-made diodes and diode modules reached US$1.2 billion in 2004, increasing by at least 20 percent from 2003.
Mainland China exported 15 billion units of diodes and diode modules in 2004. At least 18 billion units are forecast to be exported in 2005.
The main export markets for mainland China-made transistors and diodes are Southeast Asia, the US and Europe.
Highlights of the findings in Taiwan's transistor and diode industry include:
Taiwan makers of transistors and diodes achieved sales of US$772.35 million in 2004. Annual sales are expected to reach US$926.82 million in 2005.
In 2004, 18 billion units of transistors and diodes from Taiwan makers were shipped to overseas markets. The export volume is expected to grow to 21.41 billion units in 2005.
Industry overview
The combined capacity for mainland China- and Taiwan-made transistors and diodes was projected to hit 120 billion units in 2004. It is estimated to grow by 20 percent, reaching 144 billion units by the end of 2005.
Production of discrete semiconductors continues to surge despite the growing use of single-chip components in many electronic products. The combined production of mainland China and Taiwan discrete semiconductors reached 66 billion units in 2004, a 30 percent year-on-year growth. Sales revenue for discrete semiconductors was valued at US$4.92 billion in 2004. The CSIA forecasts overall sales to grow by 20 percent, hitting US$5.9 billion in 2005. In Taiwan, sales revenue of transistors and diodes was valued at US$772.35 million in 2004. The OES Laboratories of the ITRI forecast that Taiwan's transistors and diodes will be valued at US$926.82 million in 2005, increasing by about 20 percent.
Makers in mainland China produce mostly diodes, transistors, FETS and MOSFETs, and thyristors. Taiwan makers focus more on laser diodes.
Southeast Asia is the main export market for mainland China and Taiwan transistors and diodes. Some products are also exported to the US and Europe.
Japan, a global leader in the production of optical storage devices, is the top export destination for Taiwan-made laser diodes. Transistors are also shipped to Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Industry composition
Transistor and diode makers currently total 130 manufacturers. In 2004, the segment was composed of about 120 makers. Most of these producers are locally owned private enterprises. Some are Taiwan companies that set up factories in mainland China, prompted mostly by lower production costs.
The major production hubs for transistors and diodes in mainland China are the Yangtze River Delta and Circum Bohai Region. However, a significant number of companies have also set up manufacturing bases in Guangdong, Sichuan and other provinces.
Eighty-one percent of transistor and diode makers surveyed for this report are based in mainland China; 17 percent in Taiwan; and 2 percent in Hong Kong.
At present, about 10 laser diode makers operate in Taiwan. The majority of laser diode makers in Taiwan focus on product development and outsource most of their production processes.
The relatively higher level of production technology ensures that laser diode production will remain in Taiwan over the next several years.
Samples of supplier profile
Arima Optoelectronics Corp.
Established in 1998, Arima Optoelectronics Corp. is a manufacturer of UHB LEDs, laser diodes and epitaxial wafers. The company also supplies materials to the high-end optoelectronics market.
The company claims to be the largest maker of laser diodes in Taiwan, especially for DVD writer and player applications. It serves both OEM and own-brand businesses, with OEM orders accounting for about 60 percent of sales. However, seeing higher profits in promoting its own brand, the company intends to focus more on its own products.
Arima began mass production in June 2001, and its first 50,000 laser diodes were used by a major Japan-based DVD-player manufacturer.
To this day, Japan remains Arima's major market, absorbing nearly 80 percent of exports, followed by the US, Europe and South Korea.
Exports account for about 95 percent of Arima's total laser diode sales. Export revenues amounted to US$48 million in 2004 and are targeted to reach US$63 million in 2005.
In 2004, the company achieved total sales of US$51 million — 30 percent higher than in 2003. It expects to maintain this growth rate in 2005.
The company was publicly listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2003. It is a subsidiary of Arima Group, a company specializing in consumer electronics, PC notebooks, servers, Internet appliances, set-top boxes, PDAs, displays and optoelectronics, and communication products. Arima Group is also a major maker of highbrightness LEDs and maintains factories in Hsinchu and Taoyuan in Taiwan. It also has R&D centers in the UK, Switzerland, Russia, the US, Japan and mainland China.
Manufacturing capability
Arima's product line includes red laser diodes in 605nm wavelength and through-hole, traditional and surfacemount laser diodes. The company specializes in MOCVD technology.
Arima's laser diode factory, which is located in Taoyuan, has an area of 9,900 square meters and employs 800 workers. It is currently operating at about 90 percent utilization rate.
The company invested US$24.2 million in H2 2004 to increase its monthly production capacity to 7 million laser diodes. In H1 2004, it produced some 5 million units per month.
Due to the high technology required in making laser diodes for optical storage use, the company is retaining all its manufacturing activities in Taiwan and has no plans to relocate production to mainland China. The company, however, maintains service centers in Japan and the UK.
Quality standards
Arima acquired its ISO 9001 certification in August 2000. After implementing lead-free manufacturing, the company gained its ISO 14001 recognition in March 2001. In addition, the company carries a TS 16949 approval.
