Executive summary Global Sources visited factories of key mainland China makers of CCTV cameras in 2Q 2003 and published the CCTV Cameras Market Intelligence Report a month or so after. A year hence, the CCTV camera sector and other segments of the CCTV products industry, continue to expand vigorously. New entrants to the CCTV products line have increased by about 5 percent. The boost came from both domestic and foreign investments.
While the industry is relatively young, a high degree of vertical integration is happening. About 50 percent of makers are capable of manufacturing or packaging total CCTV solutions, 25 percent focus on a single product type that they export directly or provide to other domestic makers who assemble total CCTV solutions, and at least 70 percent produce two or more product types.
Offers include a wide range of CCTV products such as CCD cameras, CMOS cameras, speed-dome cameras, CRT and LCD monitors, DVRs and other CCTV accessories such as quad processors, lenses, enclosures, pan/tilts, video servers, multiplexers, quad and matrix switchers, and A/V compression cards.
Last year, about 80 percent of the industry's output was allotted to the domestic market. This has now changed as more than 54 percent of makers are deriving at least half of their revenue from overseas markets. The US and continental Europe are the main export markets.
The CCTV industry is in for a healthy growth of between 25 percent and 30 percent over the next 12 months, and companies are preparing for this. They plan to purchase additional equipment such as SMT machines, increase the number of assembly lines, set up new factories and strengthen R&D.
Last year, the security camera industry in mainland China was characterized as having moderate-sized factories measuring, on the average, 4,400sqm. Industry statistics now show that the average factory size has increased to 6,500sqm. Still, several companies are looking to expand their production areas and even set up marketing bases overseas.
About half of the companies have in-house resources to handle all stages of production while the rest rely on a support network of companies that offer outsourced services like mold production, plastic injection and component mounting through SMT.
Makers spend an average of 10 percent of their total revenues for R&D. Some companies coordinate with various technology partners to further their knowledge base. R&D teams are typically comprised of 10 to 30 members specializing in hardware, software and PCB layout.
Industry overview
Mainland China is an up-and-coming production base for security products. It is gradually acquiring greater credentials in security products manufacturing to match its success in the consumer products field.
The CCTV products sector finds its core in 60 to 80 companies, 41 of which are included in this report. Among the 41, Global Sources was given the privilege to tour the manufacturing facilities of 20 manufacturers (see table) during 2Q 2004. Several of the 20 factories were previously visited in 2Q 2003 Global Sources market intelligence report, CCTV Cameras: Supplier Capability in China, published in August 2003. Manufacturers in China are clustered in three areas. In the north, Beijing and Tianjin host a number of large-scale manufacturers. In the east, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces are also sourcing centers. However, Guangdong province, in the southern part of China, is the real center of the industry, accounting for about 50 percent of national production.
New entrants boost vertical integration
In order of production volume, Guangdong province leads, followed by Tianjin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian, according to the China Security Defense Association (CSDA) and China Public Security Magazine (CPSM). There is no distinct specialization or expertise in a particular CCTV product among manufacturers in different regions, but manufacturers from Tianjin and Jiangsu stand out to be more specialized in speed-dome cameras.
Most of the visited suppliers are concentrated in and around Guangdong—10 in Shenzhen, two in Guangzhou and two in Zhuhai. Other locations are Hangzhou (Zhejiang), Changzhou (Jiangsu) and Tianjin. Vido has strategically built two factories—one in Changzhou and another in Shenzhen that measure 2,300sqm combined.
New entrants strengthen vertical integration.
The expansion of the sector has been vigorous, and companies involved are relatively young—half of them were only established over the last five years. New entrants — those who were established only from 2003 to date — account for 5 percent of the sector. JSP and Veise are two of the new entrants into the line. Another relatively new company is Gaoqi, established in 2002.
Total solutions on offer
While the industry is relatively young, about 50 percent of the manufacturers are capable of manufacturing or packaging total CCTV solutions. Beyond, Bocom, Fujikam, HTS, Lilin and Satow are some of those who offer total CCTV solutions. Twenty-five percent of the industry focuses on single product types which they export directly or provide to other domestic manufacturers who assemble total CCTV solutions. Offers include a wide range of CCTV products such as CCD cameras, CMOS cameras, speed dome cameras, CRT and LCD monitors, DVRs, quad processors, switchers and multiplexers.
Fifteen out of 20 companies visited by Global Sources manufacture mainly CCTV cameras but also produce other CCTV products such as digital video recorders (DVRs), monitors, camera housings and CCTV accessories. TMVideo, TVT and Hikvision offer DVRs as their main product, while Emperor and Satow focus largely on producing CCTV monitors.

Changzhou Minking Electronic Co. Ltd
Changzhou Minking Electronic Co. Ltd started out as a maker of camera enclosures and pan/tilt camera products in 1995. It begun production of speed-dome cameras in 2000. The firm now also sells keyboards and IP-based speed-dome cameras. Minking is a private company, 100 percent owned by mainland investors.
Last year, the company's total sales hit US$3 million with a year-on-year increase of 47 percent, of which two-thirds came from the sales of speed-dome cameras. The firm exported 3,000 units, or US$1 million worth, to the United States, Europe, Malaysia and Singapore. The company does OEM projects for customers abroad.
Manufacturing capabilities
The ISO 9000-certified company operates a 6,000sqm, three-story factory in Changzhou, a two-hour drive from Shanghai. Soldering, final assembly and testing are done in-house, while SMT, plastic injection and hardware are currently outsourced. The factory employs 150 workers. The monthly capacity for speed-dome cameras is 1,000 units.
Global Sources toured the factory and saw that the first floor is devoted to camera enclosures and pan/tilts. There are two assembly lines with 20 workers each, plus one IPQC technician who performs mechanism and electrical functional tests.
The second floor is divided into two sections — one is for component assembly and the other is for debugging and aging. In the component assembly workshop, there are two assembly lines with 20 workers each, and one soldering line with 11 workers. In the debugging and aging workshop, 12 employees work on debugging the dome pan/tilts. Afterwards, the products are sent for aging tests of up to seven days. The aging room can hold up to 800 sets of dome pan/tilts at the same time.
The third floor holds the final assembly workshop for speed-dome cameras. There are 10 workers and five IPQC technicians who perform mechanism, functional and control tests. Each finished product must undergo a 48-hour aging test.
There is also a high-temperature aging room set up on the first floor for new products that must undergo 10-day aging tests at a 70-degree Celsius atmosphere temperature before being put into mass production. For old products, Minking carries out sample checking at a rate of 10 to 20 sets each model per quarter in this high-temperature aging room.
Although most of the hardware is subcontracted to local suppliers, the firm also has a hardware workshop to handle some work. It is equipped with one lathe, one milling machine and a drilling machine. Minking has acquired CE and FCC certifications for most of its popular models.
CCD camera modules are the major components used in speed dome cameras. Seventy percent of Minking's CCD camera modules are sourced from Sony, while the rest are purchased from Hitachi.
